Just as internationally famous as Oktoberfest is Munich’s Hofbräuhaus am Platzl, the world’s best-known beer hall or cellar. Hofbräuhaus translates as ‘court brew house’ and the Bavarian state-owned institution has a history dating back to 1589, when Duke Wilhelm V decreed a brewery should be built on the site of the royal residence. In 1607 Duke Maximilian I constructed a brewery to produce weissbier on the site of the present Hofbräuhaus, which became the brewery ‘tap’ in 1828.

The beer hall – with its long, communal tables, local meat dishes and traditional house band – is a long-standing element of Bavarian popular culture, and the Hofbräuhaus in Munich has played a significant part in Germany’s political culture, too. The official website notes Mozart and Lenin as habitués of the venue, but fails to mention that Adolf Hitler and his Nazi supporters often used the premises, along with other Munich beer halls, to proclaim policies and entertain guests. Meanwhile, what has become known as the ‘Beer Hall Putsch’ of 1923, when Hitler tried to seize power, took place in the Bürgerbräukeller beer hall, which was located on the east side of Munich.
